Shoe
Description
This leather shoe, dating from the middle of the eighteenth century and excavated from the Invincible site, is a very rare item. Contrary to popular mythology, seamen did wear shoes. Although sometimes going barefoot when climbing the rigging or cleaning the decks in warm weather, shoes were generally worn on board ship. Leather shoes from the mid-18th century are quite rare and a number of examples have been recovered from the wreck site.
