Cartridge Case Lid
Description
Light brown turned wooden object. Rounded rim and undulating surface turned on one side. Turned 18mm deep 65mm diameter raised section centred on the reverse. Two holes through rim 180°. One hole (not through) in centre. Wood grain and tool marks visible on surfaces.
The cartridge cases had a thin rope lanyard threaded through two small holes directly opposite each other and tied together after passing round the underside of the rim. This rope lanyard was then passed up and down through two similar holes in the lid. This rope may have acted as a handle, although it is more likely that it was merely to keep the lid and cartridge together, and that the cartridge case was carried against the body.
