Cartridge Case Lid
Description
Lid of cartridge case INV.521. Turned circular disc – shaped with three concentric circles on upper surface – two opposing holes approximately 7mm diameter from top to bottom. Underside has rougher finish and is shaped with interior circular disc to form stopper. Two letter ‘N’’s are stamped or inscribed onto underside of stopper section. Colour is light-mid brown.
The cartridge cases had a thin rope lanyard threaded through two small holes directly opposite each other and tied together after passing round the underside of the rim. This rope lanyard was then passed up and down through two similar holes in the lid. This rope may have acted as a handle, although it is more likely that it was merely to keep the lid and cartridge together, and that the cartridge case was carried against the body.
