Cartridge Case Lid

Description
Circular lid with two circular indents forming a raised pattern. Two small holes opposite each other around outer edge. Underside of lid has raised section which fits into cartridge case, 25mm in from edge of lid, 15mm in depth. Five “M” or “W” stamped on inside of lid plus four small notches roughly at quarters of the circle plus small circular indent in middle of inner lid.

The cartridge cases had a thin rope lanyard threaded through two small holes directly opposite each other and tied together after passing round the underside of the rim. This rope lanyard was then passed up and down through two similar holes in the lid. This rope may have acted as a handle, although it is more likely that it was merely to keep the lid and cartridge together, and that the cartridge case was carried against the body.
