Chair Part (Two Halves)
Description
Associated with INV.462 and INV.563.
Part of the back portion of a ladderback chair; this style of chair is so named because the curved rungs that form the back run horizontally - like the rungs of a ladder. It is likely to have had a rush seat. This form of chair was popular and used by all levels of society during the eighteenth century. However, on board ship, where space and storage were very limited the use of chairs would have been limited to the captain and wardroom officers. The rest of the crew would have had to suffice with stools and benches.
