Dividers
Description
Dark brown, pivoted wooden bars - this is a set of wooden dividers. Before the invention of modern GPS, sailing ships such as the HMS Invincible had to use tools such as this set of dividers. By extending the legs of this tool you could measure the distance between two points on a map, first by positioning the legs on the two points and then comparing the distance to a ruler. This would then allow for the navigator on board the vessel to calculate how long a ship needed to stay on a certain course in order to reach their intended destination.
