Bottle Stopper

Description
Clear glass cone-shaped stopper with circular flat holder at the top. Possible 'C' inscription on base of stopper. This ground glass stopper would have been used in a bottle whose contents might be re-used or refilled. This was likely to have been a medicine bottle. An 18th century medicine chest would have contained phials, bottles and jars as well as mortar and pestles and various ingredients and supplies. Apart from medicine bottles the other glass vessels recovered from the wreck of Invincible were wine bottles – which would have been stoppered with a cork. Glass stoppers such as this were made individually and the shank (which fits into the bottle neck) was ground to fit a specific bottle.
