Powder Horn Washer

Description
Powder horn top washer. Semi- circular in shape, dark brown coloured wood. Half of the object is missing. Given that the powder horn stopper has also been found it is likely that this item is a powder horn washer, found in between the stopper and the cattle horn used to hold the gunpowder. The washer is no longer complete; missing half of its former circular shape, but the hole located in its centre is still present and allows for its identification. The powder horn itself was used to store gunpowder for troops so that it could be kept dry aboard a ship. While the tip of a horn could be very ornate and fitted with a mechanism to provide control when applying powder to the ‘touch hole,’ the wide end was usually covered very simply with a central plug (see INV 469) to provide a hole for refilling.
