Tool Box

Description
Wooden box, no lid or dividers. Made by nailing five pieces of wood together – three nails on each joint. The repair and maintenance of a ship and everything on it was an ongoing task. This box may have contained an individual craftsman’s tools, enabling him to keep them close at hand as he worked. A ship’s crew would have consisted of men of many different trades, those employed to help with the running of the ship: carpenter, boatswain (responsible for rigging, sails and tackle), gunners, cooks and their respective crews and apprentices, and also the ordinary seamen who may have bought aboard skills of their own such as cobblers, tailors, cutlers and bookbinders.
