Cartridge Holder
Description
Brown, wooden cartridge holder with seven holes (five complete and two incomplete.) possibly 9 originally, but end is broken. Curved in shape.
Cartridge cases were standard issue for the British army. The average soldier in the 18th century carried two cartridge cases which each carried 18 rounds. This cartridge case contains 9 rounds which may imply that it was part of a two piece set. As early as 1738, the British Admiralty had muskets made specifically for its sailors and marines. Musket cartridges were made of paper and contained the musket ball, gunpowder and wadding. These were pre-prepared and were stored in a musket box worn around the belt. The cartridge box would have had a second flap underneath for extra protection of the cartridges.
