Cartridge Holder Cover

Description
Dark brown leather holder. ‘GR’ with emblem stamped on one side in yellow, nail holes at top.

Cartridge cases were standard issue for the British army. The average soldier in the 18th century carried two cartridge cases which each carried 18 rounds. This cartridge case contains 9 rounds which may imply that it was part of a two piece set. As early as 1738, the British Admiralty had muskets made specifically for its sailors and marines. Musket cartridges were made of paper and contained the musket ball, gunpowder and wadding. These were pre-prepared and were stored in a musket box worn around the belt. In this example, holes in the leather lip of the cartridge box were folded over to ensure a stiff, rectangular opening, allowing easy access to the cartridges. This artefact displays the Georgius Rex, or GR monogram, and the crown of George II.
