Door Handle

Description
This object could either be a door or a drawer handle. Relating this to the general design of ships themselves (in terms of the Royal Navy) it is surprising how little this changed between 1650 and 1815. A Navy rating system had to be followed and due to this, there were no technological breakthroughs in the 18th century that significantly altered ship design. The majority of ships featured three masts with square sails and this remained until steam began to replace sail in the 19th century. Aboard the ships themselves, archaeological excavations suggest that many shipboard furnishings would have been secured to the decks. Furthermore, the furnishings were often adapted for shipboard use, due to the nature of being at sea. As of this, some of the items excavated from shipwrecks are unrecognisable as they have been adapted for this purpose and are therefore different to those used on land.
