Candle Holder

Description
This metal candle holder is appropriately named a ‘C and S curve’ after the shape of the letters that it replicates. It is asymmetrical in design and is typical of the Rococo style which was an artistic style especially popular in the 18th century. This style was characterized by fanciful curved asymmetrical forms along with elaborate ornamentation. In the eighteenth century, the candlestick became, with the increased use of silver plate, an object of luxury, and with the manufacture in precious metal the attention of the artist and expert silversmith was directed to the production of costly examples for their -wealthy patrons. In the seventeenth century, for the greater part of its course, the candlestick of brass, unaffected by silver models, was still the humble furnishing of every home. There is not much evidence to suggest what the holder would have been used for other than the obvious, but perhaps the light from the candle itself would have been used to assist with pastimes aboard the Invincible.
