Candlestick Holder

Description
This is a brass candlestick holder used aboard the HMS Invincible. In comparison to the wooden candlestick holder (INV.063) this particular object presumably could have been owned by an officer or someone in a higher rank aboard the ship (due to the fact that it is made out of brass and not wood). In regards to materials of the time, it was towards the end of the seventeenth century that silver candlesticks took the lead in fashion. They replaced the popularity of the brass candlestick of recent years. From this point onwards brass was thought of as a copy in base metal of its richer prototype. However, during the eighteenth century some forms of candlesticks peculiar to brass still appeared, and later on these had an influence upon the somewhat graceless styles of the nineteenth century.
