Spoon

Description
Metal spoon – silver to bronze in colour. Hardly any damage, appears to be a letter on the reverse side – looks like an ‘I’.

The men could be provided with wooden spoons and bowls by the boatswain, but generally they preferred to buy their own. Hence why this spoon is made of metal, most likely tin, rather than being the more conventional wooden variety. We can further presume its owner was a member of the crew as the spoon has the initial ‘I’ inscribed on its underside, likely a countermeasure to stop other seamen from ‘borrowing’ this sailor's property. The food eaten on board the HMS Invincible would have included; salt beef, pork, ship’s biscuit, butter cheese and even peas.
