Olive Jar
Description
Originally referred to as an “Amphora style earthenware jar,” further research identifies this vessel as “a post-Medieval 'olive-jar' from Andalusia in southern Spain.” It is likely that the vessel was used to carry olive oil, olives in brine, wine or other food items, e.g. honey or figs. It may also have been used as a water cooler. Such vessels are likely to have originated from triangular trade by English ships between Newfoundland, Spain and Bideford and Barnstaple in North Devon, England. Evidence shows that in 1731, the English ports of Dartmouth, Exon and Poole in Devon and Dorset shipped over 600 gallons of olive oil to Newfoundland, demonstrating that trade existed in this merchandise.
