Button

Description
A black and silver circular metal button with the letter “H” on the front. This may be connected to the Howe Family since a gold seal bearing the crest of the Howe family has also been found on the Invincible. The Howe brothers were ‘dandies’ in their day and wearing their own ‘H’ buttons would have been in character. During the second half of the eighteenth century, manufacturers of metal buttons began to ‘brand’ their products by marking the backs with their names and often, their addresses. This button had the trademark ‘I. McGowan, King Sq., Soho, London’ marked on the reverse.
