Saw Handle

Description
The beech handle of a hand saw with a broad arrow symbol carved in, the steel blade has long since corroded away. This would have been used by the ships carpenters to cut wood. The ships carpenter had the important role of maintaining and repairing the ship’s hull, decks and masts. This was an ongoing task throughout a voyage and would have included repairs following storm and battle damage. The carpenter would have had a store room for keeping spare wood and a crew of up to ten men.
