Spoon

Description
Wooden spoon with carved rounded bowl and square-ended handle. There was little cutlery available for use on board. A knife, spoon, hook pot, bowl and square plate were the crewman’s basic mess kit. The spoon was usually wooden like this one, but could have been made of horn or even tin. Most of the wooden items used by the crew were purchased from the ship’s purser. These items were supplied at the sailors cost. The men would then personalise them with basic, rough carving as on this object. This particular spoon has been hand carved with the letters ‘NRI’ on one side, probably the owners initials, and ‘N+V’ on the other.
