Shoe Former

Description
A wooden shoe ‘last’ used to make and repair shoes. Constructed from hard wood to retain its shape, this shoe ‘last’ would have served a modern UK shoe size of 3-4. Most shoes at this time were constructed on straight ‘lasts’ that produced a shoe to serve both feet with the right and left sides formed by use over time. During his free time a sailor might have mended or made shoes for his own personal use or to trade on board ship. In the eighteenth century, sailors only wore shoes when ashore or when going aloft (climbing the masts).
