Barrel Stool

Description
This is one end of an elm stand that would have been used to cradle a barrel lying on its side. It seems most likely that this type of stand would be used in the spirit locker or on deck, as the casks in the hold were arranged in tiers in such a way that the barrels below provided a stand for those above. During a voyage most of the provisions would have been stored in the ships’ hold on a bed of shingle ballast. The weight of the full casks stored low in the hull would have aided in the stability of the ship. During the eighteenth century a ship was expected to carry six months’ worth of provisions, on the Invincible this would have been for a crew of 650.
