Spoon
Description
Wooden spoon - tip of bowl is missing, ‘V’ shape to end of handle, handle decorated with row of 11 “X’s”. This wooden spoon was found in bowl INV.169. The crosses inscribed on the handle may be purely decorative or could indicate ownership by one or more members of the crew. Spoons were the main item of cutlery used by sailors on board Invincible; very few sailors used forks. Most of the wooden items used by the crew were purchased from the ship’s purser. These items were supplied at the sailors cost, whether just starting his service, lost in action, or broken in bad weather.
