Cartridge Case Lid

Description
Circular wooden disc. Top is ridged. Two opposing holes right through. Underside is shaped for plugging cask.

The cartridge cases had a thin rope lanyard threaded through two small holes directly opposite each other and tied together after passing round the underside of the rim. This rope lanyard was then passed up and down through two similar holes in the lid. This rope may have acted as a handle, although it is more likely that it was merely to keep the lid and cartridge together, and that the cartridge case was carried against the body.
