Bowl

Description
Turned wooden bowl. Marked with several etchings, including a rudimentary gallows and gibbet and several broad arrows (known to be a mark of government property). From this we can be fairly certain the bowl was under the supervision of one sailor, presumably the ‘cook’ of an eight man mess. A cook in naught but name, this appointed man was merely responsible for collecting and distributing food cooked centrally. The bowl described could have been used to carry and distribute such food. Marked with the Initials ‘Hb’, thought to denote the name of an individual sailor. There are several names on the muster list which could correspond to the initials ‘Hb’, however only one of these men was on-board at the time of the ship’s grounding, Hugh Bolton. Listed in the Pay book as a Marine; however Marines could be expected to mess in a similar fashion to ordinary sailors.
