Clew Garnet Block, 14 Inch
Description
Engraved with broad arrow and “XIIII” on one side. Clew-garnet blocks were used with tackles to furl sails quickly by hoisting them upwards and inwards. This allowed the crew on the yardarm to furl, or fold, the sail along its length without having to contend with the direct weight of the sail. The name came from the blocks’ attachment to the lower corners of a square sail know as a ‘clew.’ The term garnet is believed to have come from its resemblance to a pomegranate, with the French word for pomegranate being grenat(e).
