Admiral's Fid

Description
Large wooden fid, tapered from wide to narrow end. Curved onto flat at wide end, curved at narrow end too.

A fid was a larger wooden version of the small metal marline spike that all seamen carried with them. This example, known as an Admiral’s fid because of its great size, was used when opening up the strands of a ship’s anchor cables and other large ropes when splicing.
