Sheave
Description
A cast bronze sheave from a pulley block consisting of five spokes with a circular axle. Sheaves would normally have been made of lignum vitae or ash, yet in this example it has been cast out of bronze. Aside from this change in construction material, the sheave still has the same characteristics as the wooden examples. The hole cut right through the centre was for a wooden pin. The sheave was fitted on to the pin and rotated inside the shell when the block was in use. The shell has a channel or groove shaped into its outer faces. This was to accept a rope lashing that would hold the block in place.
