Belt Buckle

Description
Gold coloured double-looped rectangular belt buckle frame, probably made from brass (an alloy of copper and zinc). It has a narrowed central pin bar, a convex profile in cross-section, from the base. The pin is missing, together with any plate or strap. Most of the original surface of the frame has corroded away but there are the remains of black patches which suggest that the frame was lacquered, which were used to protect the surface of the copper alloy. For the last few hundred years, buckles have been made from brass (an alloy of copper and zinc). In the 18th century, brass buckles incorporated iron bars, chapes, and prongs due to the parts being made by different manufactures.
