Buckle

Description
A rectangular metal buckle with rounded corners with rococo scroll decoration. Further decoration possibly twisted rope design around inner edge. A double-loop frame with cast chape drilled right through for the insertion of the steel pin or spindle. Due to the use of iron or steel for the spindle this buckle has lost it moving parts as they corroded badly in the ground or being in very poor condition. At first plain and utilitarian, shoe buckles became more elaborate as the 18th century progressed, colour and sparkle were added to the buckles. The buckles were either polished metal, usually in silver (sometimes with the metal cut into false stones in the Paris style), or with paste stones. Although buckles were functional items they could be richly decorated.
