Spoon
Description
Grey metal spoon. Oval bowl, tapered handle with flat rounded end with and scroll design. Underside marked. Imprinted ‘LONDON’ with a crown and ‘X’ on the handle. Some stamped lettering with dots inside bowl as well – possibly ‘K Gob?'
The men could be provided with wooden spoons and bowls by the boatswain, but generally they preferred to buy their own. Hence why this spoon is made of metal, most likely tin, rather than being the more conventional wooden variety. We can further presume its owner was a member of the crew as the spoon has the initial ‘TH’ inscribed on its underside, likely a countermeasure to stop other seamen from ‘borrowing’ this sailor's property. The food eaten on board the HMS Invincible would have included; salt beef, pork, ship’s biscuit, butter cheese and even peas.
