Barrel Spout

Description
A wooden spout for barrels, cylindrical in shape except for a spout shaped end. Hollow, also with evidence of shaping by tools on the opposite end of the spout. This bamboo spout may have been inserted into a barrel (through its bung hole) to make pouring of the contents easier. Barrels would have been used to store both dry and wet provisions on a ship. Water would have been stored in barrels, but has a much short ‘shelf life’ compared to beer – which was rationed to a gallon a day.
