Button

Description
Small metal button with detail on the front of the number 13 within an eight-point star. Reverse has fastening and embossed lettering ‘I. Nutting & Son, Covent Garden’. It is by no means unusual to find evidence of the presence of troops and army personnel on a naval ship. At the time of her loss in February 1758 HMS Invincible had just set sail for Canada for action against the French at Louisbourg, as confirmed in the ship’s records and on her muster list. The 13th Regiment were not serving in North America. From Admiralty letters and requests, individual officers of the 13th (formerly known as Pulterney’s regiment) requesting passage to Gibraltar. It is more than likely the Invincible headed southwards with possible calls in Spain and the Canaries, where officers could disembark and make their way onward to Gibraltar.
