Cane

Description
Probably used by the Boatswain or one of his mates to punish the ship’s boys or to “start” seamen into working harder by striking them. Discipline on board was enforced by corporal punishment, although to a lesser extent during the 1750’s than during the later Napoleonic Wars. Men to be punished were usually flogged with the cat-o-nine-tails, the boys and midshipmen with the cane.
