Soldier's Cap

Description
Dark brown, round hat. Coarse material, round raised centre with a brim.
This item is a felt hat likely worn by one of the many sailors aboard the HMS Invincible on its final voyage. Traditionally, caps of this time were of the Monmouth design, a design originating from southern Wales, that were made of wool; so the fact that this one was made of felt makes it all the more unusual. The cold and damp conditions aboard the ship, together with depictions of life onboard that were drawn or painted at the time, would indicate that warm headgear was part of the sailors’ everyday costume.
