Shovel

Description
Wooden shovels were used onboard wooden ships for a number of different purposes, such as for moving grain, gravel ballast and coal. This example was made from a single piece of beech wood carved in the direction of the grain - attributes that give it great strength and balance. A metal rim would have protected the blades, hence the name “shod” shovel. This example has a “broad arrow” mark scratched into the surface of the blade. Many items of everyday equipment recovered from the wreck are marked in this way, rather than with the more formal “broad arrow” stamp. It may indicate that they were purchased locally, or made on board, rather than being manufactured to a Navy Board contract.
