Basket

Description
Wicker basket. Brown wicker basket with large chunk missing from one side. One handles intact, other loose in bottom. Circular shape distorted, bottom caved in.

Half-size wicker basket with one carrying handle intact, the other broken. This basket was probably used as ballast-baskets – usually made of osier, for the transport and measure of shingle-ballast. Supplied to the gunner to transport loose ammunition. In total 16 wicker baskets were recovered from the gunner’s store. Several were found stacked together. One was full of split ash blocks, one contained bark and small pieces of rope and a further basket contained shaped sandstone block. Although in poor condition, it is fortunate that this basket survived, as they are made from perishable materials.
