Description
Apron of lead. Roughly square in shape. There are two holes equidistantly placed from the outside edges on each side. It is not flat curves in the top left corner and bottom edge, possibly consistent with being hammered into place. The four holes were used to secure the apron to gun.

An ‘Apron of Lead’ is a piece of square 'lead plate' that covers the vent of a cannon. It was designed to keep the charge dry and the vent clean while it was open. As with many other devices used in combustible areas of the ship, lead was used as it was non-sparking.
