Cartridge Holder Cover

Description
Almost triangular object. Dark brown on one side and (almost) black on the other. Eight holes have been punched through along one edge. One edge is untouched, while the third edge is jagged and torn. On the black side part of a royal crest is visible. The crest has been stamped in the leather. A crown is visible with “G2R” embossed below to the left. The character below the crown is partially missing.

A musket cartridge holder cover. The cartridges were made of paper and filled with pre-measured gunpowder. The leather cover has the crest of George II (1727 - 60) stamped on it. Its recovery provided one of the first clues to the date of the HMS Invincible shipwreck. This cartridge holder cover would have been used in conjunction with the cartridge cover INV 67.
