Belaying Pin

Description
Belaying pin found in rack (INV.64). Wooden, cylindrical pin. Shaped handle taking up one third of length. Slightly tapered to opposite end. Two lines around circumference of handle one at either end.

Belaying pins are short lengths of turned wood (usually elm), with handles. These were set in racks round masts and along bulwarks. They were used to secure the running rigging. The running rigging of the ship, that is the rigging used for controlling the sails and influencing the sailing qualities of the vessel, involved many yards of rope, all of which needed to be securely, if temporarily fastened during use.
