Belaying Pin Rack
Description
Belaying pin rack, wooden. Main section flat rectangle with three evenly spaced holes of same diameter. Handle like protrusion to each end of main section.
Racks of belaying pins were fitted to sides of the ship to secure the ropes of the running rigging. The running rigging of the ship, that is the rigging used for controlling the sails and influencing the sailing qualities of the vessel, involved many yards of rope, all of which needed to be securely, if temporarily fastened during use. Depending upon the gauge of the rope, and the importance of its function, the ends were secured to various points around the ships decks and rails. One mean of securing them was by using a belaying pin held in a belaying pinrail.
