Candle Holder

Description
This square wooden object is a mid-eighteenth century candlestick holder used on-board the Invincible. The material of the object suggests that it may have been owned by a poorer member of the crew as opposed to an officer or someone of a higher social class. Open flames were forbidden on sailing-ships and therefore all candles had to be housed in lanterns for extra safety. This emphasises that while the only source of light was fire, its use was strictly regulated. The only fire permitted on-board, was in the gallery stove.
