Child's Shoe

Description
This leather shoe would have fitted a child of perhaps 5 or 6 years of age. It was common for boys to go to sea in service, some from quite a young age, they may have been there as servants to the higher ranking crew, or to quite literally ‘learn the ropes’ and train to become a skilled sailor. Young children and women don’t appear on the ship’s muster roll – which was kept for accounting purposes – and it is hard to trace their presence on board ship. It is known though that women sometimes accompanied their husbands and no doubt children also. It is possible that this child was the son or daughter of either one of the ship’s officers or of a soldier in transit to North America.
