Bucket

Description
A leather bucket with leather twisted handle single leather strip with single stitches seam double stitch at base. Leather crossed. Two leather cross straps are supporting base a large broad arrow on one side.
Broad arrow scratched to side.

Leather buckets were used as powder buckets, or fire buckets. The main advantage with leather fire buckets was that, unlike wooden buckets, leather buckets don’t have to be kept wet to keep watertight. This bucket can be identified as a powder bucket as it has a handle directly attached to the body whereas water buckets have metal rings for handle attachment. Leather was used for powder buckets because they could be made without metal so there was no risk of striking a spark. The broad arrow scratched onto its side symbolizes that it was government property.
