Bucket

Description
A leather bucket with leather handle. Leather base, sides and rim, wooden rim support (visible). Leather handle supports. String stitching at joins “handle included." Stamped with Broad arrow.

Leather buckets were carried on board for fire-fighting purposes. They were placed throughout the ship and were filled with salt water. When a major fire broke out on board, the sailors formed a human chain and passed the buckets to the area of the fire. The main advantage of leather was that, unlike wooden buckets, leather buckets didn’t have to be kept wet to remain watertight. This example has both a “hide” mark and has been scored with the “broad arrow” which symbolizes that it was government property.
