Ball of Darning Wool
Description
This khaki coloured ball of wool was discovered alongside a similarly coloured stocking with a neatly darned repair. It is likely that a sailor would have spent at least some of his spare time in making and maintaining his clothing. Not until 1857 was a uniform required for seamen, but by the mid eighteenth century officers wore a uniform, as did the marines. It was in the mid eighteenth century campaigns in North America that green uniforms were first introduced as a practicality whilst fighting in woodland (the first camouflage).
