Cooper's Tool

Description
Cooper’s tool made from copper alloy. Hexagonal shape widening from base to head. Head is at 90° to shaft.

This Copper alloy tool, with a square section bent bar and a hammered end, was known as a “driver” or “setter”. Copper alloy tools were used by the ships cooper to ‘knock-down’ or remove the hazel and copper hoops from the powder barrels and dismantle them after their contents had been transferred to the magazine powder box. Whilst working with gun powder barrels it was important not to create sparks, so copper alloy tools, which are non-sparking, were commonly used in potentially combustible environments. It would have been used in conjunction with a copper alloy hammer head.
