Bucket
Description
Wooden buckets were used for a variety of tasks on board warships during the eighteenth century. The mess cook would have used one to collect the 'grog' (rum issue) for his mess. It may also have been used to clean the decks. During battle it would be filled with seawater for damp boring the cannon bores between shots. This wooden bucket has a larger base than opening which would have made it more stable and less likely to fall over. Like many of the containers on a ship it would have been made by a cooper.
