Single Crease or Making Iron
Description
Single crease or making iron - the Caulker would drive the oakum strands, picked from old rope into the seams between the ship's hull and deck planking with the caulking iron and then compress or 'harden down', with a making iron or crease iron like this one. This pressed the oakum below the surface of the seam which is then filled or 'payed up' with pitch. Crease irons came in various sizes and were used according to the width of the seams. This crease iron has the letters J.D. stamped on it and the striking head has been broken off.
