Commissioners House

Description
Black and white photograph of the front entrance to Commissioners House. The front door and porch with canopy can be seen with railings and shrubbery in the foreground.
The back of the image has been annotated: ‘Front of A.S. House Chatham/4’
The ‘A.S’ would stand for Admiral Superintendent as the Officer in charge of the Dockyard would have been titled. The house is now referred to as Commissioners House as it was originally built as the home to the civilian Resident Commissioner of the Dockyard until 1832 when the Navy Board was abolished and the post was replaced by the Superintendent of the Yard in Commission. The house was also later known as Medway House.
The image forms a section of a panoramic view of this area of the Dockyard, see also: 2014.0030.01, 03-04.
