Letter
Description
Handwritten letter, written in pen, two pages and accompanying envelope. The letter was sent from a Mrs Florence Caparn of 99 Myrtle Avenue, Maplewood, New Jersey, USA to Sydney Charles Ledger and addressed to him at the RNA Hospital in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. The postage stamps read 6 April 1944 and 17 May 1944. The address has been crossed out and altered to 24 Otway Street, Chatham, suggesting Sydney had been in hospital but then moved to his home town. Ledger was discharged from the Navy on medical grounds on 17 April 1944.
The envelope has also been annotated in pencil: ‘Surveyed 18/3/44’.
Mrs Caparn is potentially someone Sydney befriended whilst in USA in 1941 for HMS Dido’s repair work.
